Why Trust Is the Strongest Weapon an Army Has

Soldiers do not fight for flags in the abstract. After the Second World War, researchers who questioned thousands of soldiers kept finding the same answer: men hold the line for the men beside them. Military sociologists call it cohesion, and armies treat it as more valuable than any weapon.

Cohesion runs on trust. Every plan an officer makes assumes that the men will be where they said they would be, and that what is said in the command channel stays there. Trust is what lets fifty people act like one.

Treachery attacks exactly that. The traitor rarely announces himself. He leaks a plan, passes on a screenshot, warns a rival group, or switches sides when it suits him. Each act seems small to him. To the group, it is a crack in the wall.

Psychologists who study betrayal, such as Jennifer Freyd, found that betrayal by someone inside the group hurts far more than an attack from outside, because it destroys the belief that the group is safe. After one betrayal, people start to hold back, to share less, to plan less.

From the Leader's chair, a traitor costs more than one man. Every secret must now be guarded twice. Every new member is trusted a little less. The honest men pay for what the traitor did.

Our own history proves it twice over. In 2020 the Grand Marshal ShunrokuTaishiro seized Imperial Japan from Aleczaender; the loyal men left, and Imperial Japan collapsed. Later Octavia, which stretched from Morocco to Scotland, fell not in the field but because Aleczaender's successor Richard abused his admin powers and worked with the Solums to bring it down.

Loyalty is shown in small, daily things: keeping a secret, keeping a promise, keeping your post. Nobody becomes a traitor in one day. And nobody becomes loyal in one day either. It is built, or it is broken, one choice at a time.

The oath of humility

I am guilty of treachery!
I turned my back on my brothers!
The banner armed me, and I betrayed it!
My loyalty is no longer for sale!
I give my heart to the Imperium!

I am nothing without the Imperium!
My pride is my enemy!
My rank is lent to me, not owned by me!
I bow my head before the cause!
I was weak, and the weak are carried by the strong!
I will carry my brothers, and never be carried!
I will obey every lawful order!
I will speak of victory, never of defeat!
I will guard my tongue and guard my post!
I will be first to the muster and last to leave!
I give my strength to Octavium!
I give my loyalty to Aleczaender!

I, (Username), swear as a steadfast loyalist of Aleczaender
With dedication as a proclaimed Octavian
To serve, and declare sincere loyalty
To obey every lawful order given
To educate all newcomers of Octavium,
To master the lore of Aleczaender,
To uphold my role in service under this Oath
In my duty for Octavium
And under our Great Leader Aleczaender.
I therefore vow to commit to this Oath
And if I am to ever break this sworn Oath,
Then I will accept the consequences of my failure
AVE ALECZAENDER AVE OCTAVIUM.

Thirty lines, screamed one by one after the instructor. A line that is not loud enough is screamed again.

The chant

DEATH TO DEFEATISM!
DEATH TO TREACHERY!
ALECZAENDER!
VICTORY OR NOTHING!
DEATH TO DEFEATISM! DEATH TO DEFEATISM! DEATH TO DEFEATISM!
