How Anyone Slides into Online Crime, and How to Stop

Doxxing means publishing someone's private details: a real name, a school, an address, a photo. Taking over another person's account, or attacking a server, is hacking. Both are crimes in most countries, not pranks, and both can follow a person into adult life.

Almost nobody plans to become an online criminal. Researchers who interviewed young offenders found a slope: first a grudge or a wish to be noticed, then a small step like sharing a screenshot, then praise from a small crowd that cheers the next step on.

Psychologist John Suler named the online disinhibition effect: behind a screen, people feel invisible and do things they would never do face to face. The screen hides the hurt from the one doing it. It does not hide it from the victim.

A common starting point is feeling wronged: kicked from a group, demoted, mocked, or treated unfairly. That feeling is real. Revenge is the wrong answer to it. Every doxx and every stolen account creates a new victim, and often a new person who wants revenge, and the circle never ends.

From the Leader's side, one doxxer can make a whole community afraid to speak, post photos or trust each other. Fear spreads faster than any rumour.

Some of the most dangerous people online are recruiters for violent extremist networks. One of them, the Order of Nine Angles, is a neo-Nazi Satanist network that has been linked to terrorism cases and to the grooming and abuse of teenagers. Its members look for lonely or angry young people in games and Discord servers, flatter them, push them toward ever darker "tests", and then use what they made them do to control them. If anyone pushes you toward hate, toward violence, or toward hurting yourself or others, stop talking to them, keep the evidence, and tell a parent, an officer you trust, or the police.

If you have been wronged: talk to someone you trust, report it to the officers or to the platform, and walk away from anyone who cheers you toward revenge. Keep your screen clean.

The oath of humility

I am guilty of crimes of the screen!
I hurt people from behind a keyboard!
Private details are never mine to share!
If I am wronged, I will report it, not take revenge!
I will keep my screen clean!

I am nothing without the Imperium!
My pride is my enemy!
My rank is lent to me, not owned by me!
I bow my head before the cause!
I was weak, and the weak are carried by the strong!
I will carry my brothers, and never be carried!
I will obey every lawful order!
I will speak of victory, never of defeat!
I will guard my tongue and guard my post!
I will be first to the muster and last to leave!
I give my strength to Octavium!
I give my loyalty to Aleczaender!

I, (Username), swear as a steadfast loyalist of Aleczaender
With dedication as a proclaimed Octavian
To serve, and declare sincere loyalty
To obey every lawful order given
To educate all newcomers of Octavium,
To master the lore of Aleczaender,
To uphold my role in service under this Oath
In my duty for Octavium
And under our Great Leader Aleczaender.
I therefore vow to commit to this Oath
And if I am to ever break this sworn Oath,
Then I will accept the consequences of my failure
AVE ALECZAENDER AVE OCTAVIUM.

Thirty lines, screamed one by one after the instructor. A line that is not loud enough is screamed again.

The chant

DEATH TO DEFEATISM!
DEATH TO DOXXING!
ALECZAENDER!
VICTORY OR NOTHING!
DEATH TO DEFEATISM! DEATH TO DEFEATISM! DEATH TO DEFEATISM!
