Small Orders, Big Armies: Why Drill Matters

Every serious army in history has drilled. The Roman legions marched in step, the old Prussian regiments practised the same movements thousands of times, and modern armies still start every day in formation. It is not because jumping or marching wins wars by itself.

Drill builds the habit of doing what is ordered, at once, without arguing. Psychologists who study habits, like Wendy Wood, have shown that most of what we do each day runs on habit. A soldier who obeys small orders automatically will obey large orders automatically when it counts.

There is a second reason. When a group moves together in time, people feel closer. The historian William McNeill called this muscular bonding: marching, drilling and moving in rhythm make a crowd of strangers feel like one body. Later experiments found that people who move in sync trust and help each other more.

Loyalty jacks are the Imperium's drill. They are small on purpose. Anyone can do them. That is exactly why failing them matters: a man who will not finish the easiest order shows everyone that orders, to him, are optional.

From the officer's side, every unfinished sentence is paperwork, follow-up and a bad example for the recruits watching. If one man skips his jacks and nothing happens, the next man skips too.

Discipline is not punishment. It is training. Each jack counted honestly is one more brick in the habit of obedience.

The oath of humility

I am guilty of failing my jacks!
I was given an order and I did not finish it!
My body belongs to the discipline of the Legion!
I will count every jack and cheat none!
I will be first on the square tomorrow!

I am nothing without the Imperium!
My pride is my enemy!
My rank is lent to me, not owned by me!
I bow my head before the cause!
I was weak, and the weak are carried by the strong!
I will carry my brothers, and never be carried!
I will obey every lawful order!
I will speak of victory, never of defeat!
I will guard my tongue and guard my post!
I will be first to the muster and last to leave!
I give my strength to Octavium!
I give my loyalty to Aleczaender!

I, (Username), swear as a steadfast loyalist of Aleczaender
With dedication as a proclaimed Octavian
To serve, and declare sincere loyalty
To obey every lawful order given
To educate all newcomers of Octavium,
To master the lore of Aleczaender,
To uphold my role in service under this Oath
In my duty for Octavium
And under our Great Leader Aleczaender.
I therefore vow to commit to this Oath
And if I am to ever break this sworn Oath,
Then I will accept the consequences of my failure
AVE ALECZAENDER AVE OCTAVIUM.

Thirty lines, screamed one by one after the instructor. A line that is not loud enough is screamed again.

The chant

DEATH TO DEFEATISM!
DEATH TO LAZINESS!
ALECZAENDER!
VICTORY OR NOTHING!
DEATH TO DEFEATISM! DEATH TO DEFEATISM! DEATH TO DEFEATISM!
