The Chain of Command and Why It Must Hold

An army is a large number of people who must act as one, fast, often without time to discuss. The chain of command is the answer armies found: every man knows whom he obeys and whom he leads.

The Prussian general Helmuth von Moltke wrote that no plan survives first contact with the enemy. What does survive is the chain: when the plan breaks, officers decide, and the men move. If every soldier stops to argue, the unit stands still while the enemy keeps moving.

Researchers who study teams under pressure, from aircraft cockpits to emergency rooms, found that clear roles save time and save mistakes. Arguing at the wrong moment does not make a team smarter. It makes it slower.

This does not mean a soldier has no voice. Good armies have proper channels: you obey now and raise your complaint afterwards, respectfully, to the right person. That is how mistakes get fixed without the unit falling apart.

From the officer's side, open defiance in front of the ranks is a challenge to everyone's discipline. Other men watch to see if it works. If it does, the next order is weaker, and the one after that weaker still.

Our own house has seen what follows. In September 2026 Qwerty, a Generalissimo, refused the chain of command and the authority of the Graend Council. He was liquidated and later removed from his position. The chain held. The man who pulled against it did not.

Obedience is not weakness. It is the strength of a whole army moving as one.
