Pride Before the Fall: Arrogance in History and in Our Own House

History keeps one lesson more often than any other: the proud man stops listening, and the man who stops listening falls. The Greeks had a word for it, hubris, and every one of their tragedies ends the same way.

In 480 before Christ the Persian king Xerxes ordered the sea itself whipped three hundred times because a storm broke his bridge. He was so sure of himself that he marched the largest army of the ancient world into Greece. It was broken at Salamis and Plataea.

In 1812 Napoleon, master of Europe, ignored every warning about the Russian winter and marched on Moscow with some six hundred thousand men. Fewer than a hundred thousand came back. In 1912 the builders of the Titanic boasted that she could not sink, and sent her out with lifeboats for barely half the people on board.

Our own house has its examples too. Arxilium took the creed Aleczaender had built and, through Illiumism, claimed to be its founder. It is remembered only as a warning. In September 2026 Qwerty, who held the rank of Generalissimo in nine divisions and a seat in Octavian Leadership, mocked a court session, disrespected a Graend Councilman and refused the chain of command. He was liquidated, and later removed from his position. His rank had not made him bigger than the Imperium. It had made his fall longer.

Psychologists describe the same thing in modern words: people who rise fast often start to overrate themselves and to ignore advice, and the higher they stand, the fewer people dare to correct them.

Humility is not weakness. It is knowing that every rank is lent by the Imperium and can be taken back. Serve the post, respect the men above you, and remember that no man is greater than the cause.

The oath of humility

I am guilty of arrogance!
I thought my rank made me bigger than the Imperium!
Every rank is lent, and can be taken back!
I am small, and the cause is great!
I will serve with humility!

I am nothing without the Imperium!
My pride is my enemy!
My rank is lent to me, not owned by me!
I bow my head before the cause!
I was weak, and the weak are carried by the strong!
I will carry my brothers, and never be carried!
I will obey every lawful order!
I will speak of victory, never of defeat!
I will guard my tongue and guard my post!
I will be first to the muster and last to leave!
I give my strength to Octavium!
I give my loyalty to Aleczaender!

I, (Username), swear as a steadfast loyalist of Aleczaender
With dedication as a proclaimed Octavian
To serve, and declare sincere loyalty
To obey every lawful order given
To educate all newcomers of Octavium,
To master the lore of Aleczaender,
To uphold my role in service under this Oath
In my duty for Octavium
And under our Great Leader Aleczaender.
I therefore vow to commit to this Oath
And if I am to ever break this sworn Oath,
Then I will accept the consequences of my failure
AVE ALECZAENDER AVE OCTAVIUM.

Thirty lines, screamed one by one after the instructor. A line that is not loud enough is screamed again.

The chant

DEATH TO DEFEATISM!
DEATH TO ARROGANCE!
ALECZAENDER!
VICTORY OR NOTHING!
DEATH TO DEFEATISM! DEATH TO DEFEATISM! DEATH TO DEFEATISM!
