Courage Is a Skill, Not a Gift
Every soldier feels fear. The British psychiatrist Lord Moran, who studied men in two world wars, wrote that courage is like a bank account: it is spent under strain and must be built up again. Nobody is born without fear. Brave men are the ones who act anyway.
Psychologists call the method exposure: facing a fear in small steps makes it weaker. The soldier who stands in small fights grows the courage he will need in big ones. The soldier who runs from small fights teaches himself to run.
Fear is also contagious, just like morale. When one man breaks and runs, the men beside him feel the pull to follow. History is full of battles lost not because the enemy was stronger but because a panic started in one place and spread down the line.
Courage spreads too. Studies of groups under threat show that one calm, steady person makes everyone around him calmer. The man who stays becomes the reason others stay.
From the commander's view, a unit is built on the promise that nobody faces the enemy alone. The coward breaks that promise to save himself, and leaves his brothers to pay for it.
You will be afraid again. When you are, remember: stand. Move forward. Never run.
The oath of humility
When my brothers stood, I ran!
Fear is no excuse for leaving the fight!
I will stand with my brothers!
I will move forward, even when afraid!
I am nothing without the Imperium!
My pride is my enemy!
My rank is lent to me, not owned by me!
I bow my head before the cause!
I was weak, and the weak are carried by the strong!
I will carry my brothers, and never be carried!
I will obey every lawful order!
I will speak of victory, never of defeat!
I will guard my tongue and guard my post!
I will be first to the muster and last to leave!
I give my strength to Octavium!
I give my loyalty to Aleczaender!
I, (Username), swear as a steadfast loyalist of Aleczaender
With dedication as a proclaimed Octavian
To serve, and declare sincere loyalty
To obey every lawful order given
To educate all newcomers of Octavium,
To master the lore of Aleczaender,
To uphold my role in service under this Oath
In my duty for Octavium
And under our Great Leader Aleczaender.
I therefore vow to commit to this Oath
And if I am to ever break this sworn Oath,
Then I will accept the consequences of my failure
AVE ALECZAENDER AVE OCTAVIUM.
Thirty lines, screamed one by one after the instructor. A line that is not loud enough is screamed again.
The chant
DEATH TO COWARDICE!
ALECZAENDER!
VICTORY OR NOTHING!
DEATH TO DEFEATISM! DEATH TO DEFEATISM! DEATH TO DEFEATISM!
